MAIM - DECEASED TO EXIST
Kategori: Albums
Well this is a band from Linköping, Sweden and it's their second album - and a very short version of this review would be to say: OLDSCHOOL DEATH METAL. Because that's exactly what it is, yet it sounds fresh - which is why I really like it. It has all the elements of the Swedish oldschool style yet it's not boring. The crushing drums, the simple riffs, dark melodies... and a touch of horror film atmosphere.
As many of those kinds of bands it's not full pace ahead all the time, but there are breaks with super heavy doomy parts - it's especially here where you feel the atmospheric side of the album. They have even included an instrumental track that makes you think of a graveyard in a black and white zombie movie. It's a really nice touch that adds some more depth to the fast drums. And those parts are not to be marginalised either - when I put on this album this morning the opening riffs of Gravedigger Sacrifice almost had me starting a moshpit by myself! They really have that drive that I love about this genre, like the classic stuff from DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED and GRAVE etc. Quite impressive for a band that haven't been around for so long yet!
One of the things I love the most with this album is the mixing however. It has this live-feeling, really raw - yet it's refined so you hear every instrument. If you have some decent speakers you can just crank the volume up and close your eyes and you'll have absolutely no problem at all to imagine you're at a gig! In other words I think they've managed to capture the energy from a live show and yet keeping the sound quality from a studio recording. Most excellent!
So if you like your Death Metal raw and full of energy there's no reason not to check these guys out!
