Fagerlund's reviews

Here I will post my reviews, of mostly Metal concerts/festivals that I've been to.

Slaughterfest: Onslaught + M-pire of Evil + Master + Tantara, Stockholm 28/11-2013

Tantara
First out this early evening was Tantara from Norway, the youngsters of this tour... I've found that Thrash from Norway tends to be quite nice so was looking forward to this set. And they did indeed deliver energetic, and quite modern Thrash. Nice mix of fast and slightly less fast, lots of aggression and some pretty technical parts. And a very solid drummer. Bit short set, since they were all in a rush to catch a boat but definitely a nice start of the evening.

Master
Wasn't long ago that they headlined a show here in Stockholm, so a bit surprised to see them back so soon. Not that I mind though, I really like Master. Again, a short set and not much talk in between the songs as they didn't really have time... some mutterings from Speckman that wasn't quite audible, but mostly it was just Oldschool Death Metal. He did respond to a guy in the crowd though, changing up the set and played the song he had been shouting for all night. That's always nice to see, especially when he had the good taste to shout for a great song!
Very solid again, and this time they had pretty good sound all around which was nice to hear indeed.

M-pire of Evil
Have to admit I hadn't even heard about these guys... but turns out they're quite newly formed (2010) with old Venom members. But unlike Venom this stuff was actually really tight (great drummer!). They delivered crushing riff after crushing riff, and a nice show as well on this tiny stage. The crowd got really into it. Despite the rough start (guitarist broke a string on the first song...) they salvaged the show and made a really nice appearance! Finished off the set with Black Metal and Witching Hour... a made them sound better than when Venom plays them. So good stuff!

Onslaught
Third time I see these Thrash veterans, and second time this year as I saw them at Metal Days this summer as well. They've just released a new album, and it's pretty damn awesome. I almost dare saying it's the best Thrash album released this year. So of course I had to see them again, even if it's a bit weird seing these legends on such a small venue (a basement bar that takes some 150 people or so, I think it was around 100 there this night).
However, since the sound was better this night than I've ever heard it at this place it was all good. Pretty cool atmosphere when the band gets so close to the crowd, and the crowd goes mental. You could tell the band where really happy with the response they got this time around, maybe even a bit surprised. Last time they played in Stockholm was a bit odd, no one knew about the show - the original one was cancelled and then rescheduled and you had to basically ask the promoters to find out about the new date... so obviously barely anyone showed up that time. And those who did where basically there to see the support band, Suidakra. This time it felt a lot better, as obviously the crowd was there for Onslaught and Chaos.
I must say though, it's really funny to watch their drummer in action... he plays some 250 BPM or so, but looking at him he's just sitting there chilling behind his sunglasses with a tiny smile on his lips. Impressive drummer indeed.
Again, a bit short set due to travel arrangements... but still a really nice and varied set. The old songs fits perfectly with the new ones, and they sure knew which ones to play live. 66, Fucking 6 had the hole place shaking I think.
Quality band, great show. Hope to have them back soon!
