Fagerlund's reviews

Here I will post my reviews, of mostly Metal concerts/festivals that I've been to.

Gorgoroth + Vader + Valkyrja + The Sickening, Stockholm 6/11-2011

Kategori: Concerts

The Sickening
I had no idea this band was on the bill this night. Didn't say on the ticket, or posters or anywhere else that I could find! And it didn't help that they introduced themselves with "Hei vi er FFFNÖÖ fra Norge!" and no backdrop and no merchandise...! I actually did find their name on Vader's homepage though!
Anyhow, they're playing some Death/Grind, very intense stuff. They had some pretty cool stuff going on, but I'm not that into Grind. It was still rather enjoyable though, especially for a first support band! When it came as a bonus like this that's totally fine with me!

Valkyrja
Third time I see these guys! They play Black Metal in the vein of Watain. Which is funny I guess, since Watain played two days before (and I skipped that because it was a bloody expensive gig for a band that plays every year anyway!) so there was a lot of comparisons going on obviously. And most seemed to agree that Valkyrja does their thing better actually. I personally like Valkyrja better on CD than Watain, but live they've been a bit so-so. First time was excellent, the second time it was a bit tame. But the second time I saw them they also had a session drummer for a brief time (I think they replaced him for the second half of that tour even), but now Jocke Wallgren is back behind the kit. I actually heard (and later saw on facebook) that Jocke was very disappointed with his performance this night. I have no clue what the hell he's on about. It was tight as hell, and I think his presence behind the drums lifted the band this night, as this was actually the best show by them I've seen so far!

Vader
After that it was time for the mighty Vader! Third time I see them, and you just know what to expect. They're solid as hell and they just bring it. Every time. Spotless performance, and a set filled with amazing riffs and raw power. They even played one of my favourite songs that I haven't gotten to see live before; Wings!
I heard that someone said the crowd was a bit tame, I can't really tell because I was on the frontrow and I had hair whipping my back for the entire gig so I can say for sure that at least two rows were headbanging non-stop! That was until the very last song of course, where they decided to add an extra song in the form of a Slayer cover. Then the crowd exploded, and I have a rather large bruise on my hip thanks to being smashed into the fence for that!
I guess it's all right that they played a Slayer cover, especially since it seems they actually added it for us (looking at setlists from earlier in the tour) but personally I think Vader has better songs themselves, so why not play Lead Us or What Colour is Your Blood for example? :)
Anyhow, it was a great show as expected and with Wings in the set I'm very happy! Oh, and after they left the stage they played the Imperial March in the speakers. <3

Setlist (something like this I think):
Return to the Morbid Reich
Sothis
Devilizer
Never Say My Name
Come and See My Sacrifice
Black Velvet And Skulls Of Steel
Wings
Carnal
I Am Who Feasts Upon Your Soul
The Wrath
Decapitated Saints
Kingdom
Silent Empire
Cold Demons
Helleluyah!!! (God Is Dead)

Encore:
Para Bellum
This Is the War
Raining Blood

Gorgoroth
This was one of those weird shows where the headliner had a closing band playing after them for some reason... I mean no disrespect to Gorgoroth, but they didn't really seem into it. So neither was I. Or half the crowd that left during their set.
I mean, it was not bad. Not at all, it was just... nothing special. They seemed a bit tired or something. They shined on bits and pieces but mostly I was just standing there and wondering what the hell the singer was thinking when he made that corpse paint? Because he seriously looked like a little kitten! And to add to the image he was even wearing a collar!!
Oh well, I didn't really have any expectations on them anyway since I was barely even aware of the fact that they were still playing after Ghaal left and the name court thing and everything. It was all right, but nothing more!

Got it confirmed in Vader's tourblog that they played Slayer just because they loved us. <3

Asbra review! Jag håller med dig kring Gorgoroth, de var sjukt opepp och kändes allmänt borta och hängiga. Dålig Setlist också, en besvikelse som fan!
