Fagerlund's reviews

Here I will post my reviews, of mostly Metal concerts/festivals that I've been to.

Obscura + Spawn of Possession + Gorod + Exivious, Stockholm 13/3-2012

Exivious
First out this night, all though a bit late, was this Dutch band. I had never heard them before, nor even heard about them, but apparently they released their first and so far only album in 2009. They were a bit of a surprise to me, as first of all they had no vocals it was pure instrumental. And not only that, it was some kind of Jazz/Death Metal hybrid! It was quite nice warm up indeed!

Gorod
Then there was some Technical Death Metal from France. I was planning to see them when I was at Hellfest 2010, but actually missed them because they played too early and it was a long line to get in to the festival area... So I got a new chance now! I've not really listened to them before, but it was all right. Pretty typical Technical Death (if there's such a thing as typical Technical Death...) with some nice parts! I really liked how explosive they were on stage though, lots of energy there! And pretty cool that the singer had actually learnt quite a lot of Swedish phrases to use! It's always a nice touch when they bother to do that! So that was an all right show!

Spawn of Possession
Spawn of Possession, first time playing in Stockholm despite being Swedish and formed in 1997! They're a bit of an Underground favourite in Sweden I think, with their extremely fast Technical Death Metal! They sure had quite a lot of fans in the crowd at least!
Another cool thing with them is that they have Christian Muenzner on guitar on their new album (Incurso), so for a bit I thought he'd play two sets in a row - but no, apparently they have Danny Tunker (God Dethroned etc) replacing him live! Not a bad choice at all! But... he had hurt his foot! So he was actually sitting down playing the whole gig! Cool that it didn't stop him at least!
And as for the sound itself it was just super-tight. They fucked up the ending of the second song pretty badly, but other than that I think it was pretty much spot on. Damn impressive at such speeds! I also liked their set, which was quite varied actually. Didn't really expect that! But a cool show overall, and nice to have gotten to see them as well!

Obscura
Second time I get to see these German guys! And if you've read my stuff before you know that I like them a lot! Last time I saw them at Hellfest 2010 I was pretty much blown away, and especially impressed by Steffen Kummerer who is probably one of the, if not the best guitar player I ever saw live! So I had quite high expectations really.
Which was why the start of the show was a bit surprising! It seemed Christian was a bit off quite often in the first couple of songs which felt a bit uncharacteristic from a guy like him! I guess he had a bad night, and considering they were late and only arrived to the venue like 45 minutes before the first band got on stage I guess it's not so strange... but he shaped up for the second half of the gig at least!
And Steffen just kept impressing me. He's just one of those guys who doesn't seem to make any mistakes... I think that he alone bears this band on his shoulders! And considering what extremely talented company he's in, that's quite a feat!
It's too bad that a huge part of the crowd left after Spawn of Possession were done (that's a lesson for all bands touring in Sweden I guess, don't tour with a Swedish band, especially not if you're playing on a normal weekday), but it seemed that the band were in good spirit anyway! And I think it was a pretty nice atmosphere among the ones who were there so it's okay!
Personally I'm a bit sad that they didn't play a single song from Retribution, but I guess it makes sense on this tour. What doesn't make sense to me though, is a drum solo when you're having a pretty short set! And considering that many songs from Retribution are only 3 minutes long... Ah well! What was cool though, was that they played Orbital Elements (instrumental) and Incarnated! And with really good sound as well, so you could really appreciate the technical stuff going on (which by the way is true for all bands of this night).
So all in all I think the set could've been a bit better (not saying it was bad though, I don't think Obscura has any bad songs...), and a few mistakes... This was not quite as good as last time I saw them. But it was still a great show! And hope they come back for the next tour!

Setlist was something like this, I'm not 100% sure though:
Septuagint
Vortex Omnivium
Incarnated
Ocean Gateways
Orbital Elements
Noospehre
Choir of Spirits
Universe Momentum
Drum Solo
The Anticosmic Overload
Centric Flow
