Hellfest! Four years since last time, and I said I would probably not be back, but then this line-up happened... again. It also happened at the same time as a general train strike in France, and of course my train was cancelled... which meant I was a bit late and so missed a couple of bands on the first day since we needed to do the necessary festival shopping. Oh well, that's okay there was plenty of bands to see still... I managed to see 60 in total actually. Must be some kind of record... Also a couple of pictures this time, and for conveniance sake I gathered a couple of setlist towards the end of the post.
Friday 20/6
Caspian
First band I saw was a Post Rock band I had never heard of. They played a really tight set and sounded pretty cool. Didn't quite feel like a live band to me though, but rather something you listen to at home where you can sit back and relax for a bit to some heavy music. Not a bad start!
Satan
After that it was off to one of the mainstages to see this classic NWoBHM band! And well, it sounded just like that. Classic NWoBHM! Pretty much exactly what I was expecting! Really cool stuff, but due to the heat I left after a couple of songs... always the down side of the mainstage of open air festivals!
Gehenna
Then some Norwegian Black. Unfortunately they didn't really keep my attention for long, as they were kind of bland actually. Nothing that stuck for me at least.
Loudblast
Saw these oldschool French Death Metallers last time I was at Hellfest as well, and they sure are a crowd favourite here! Damn solid Death Metal, and that's all I need to say I think.
Deströyer 666
Australian Death Thrash and the first headbanging of the festival for me! Their brand of Thrash always gets to me, and they seem to always deliver. Awesome stuff!
Hail of Bullets
Then some Dutch Death Metal! Wasn't long since I last saw these guys so decided to not stay for the whole set, but I know they always deliver top notch quality through and through! With van Drunen around, how could they not? More headbanging and then off to grab some food...
Therapy?
Saw a couple of songs from a distance here, nothing that really made me want to go closer. Not my cup of blood.
Rob Zombie
So I mean, you have to see Rob Zombie when he's playing at a festival you're at... I don't really listen to him, but he has his show. I must say though, that this time it was a bit weak. I don't know if it was too early and too bright sun, but I never really felt the flow. Rob had lots of energy, and great interaction with the crowd... he even took a horse head from the crowd and put it on his head and announced the next song as "Oldschool Horse Metal" (which was Am I Evil? origianlly by Diamond Head). And that's another thing... quite a lot of covers actually. Felt a bit cheap that someone as renown had to play Metallica and Alice Cooper to get any response.... but ohwell. I belive Rob has had better days than this one!
Turisas
Stopped by to see Tursisas who're usually good live, but when the third song they played was from the new album and sounded like electronica I left pretty quickly with no regrets... don't know where they're taking this band really!
Sepultura
Instead I caught the second half of these Brazilian legends! They're really damn solid, but I do miss the dreads who're completely abscent from this band these days... And especially a second guitar would be nice. But they still have the beats and rythms, and the vocals were really powerful. Roots Bloody Roots had people dancing all over the place!
Iron Maiden
And then Iron Maiden. What can I say about Iron Maiden really? This time around we were granted a set with a lot of Seventh Son material, which is just awesome. Add some other pretty odd songs like The Prisoner and Phantom of the Opera along with the classics and you get a pretty cool set! Also some very nice backdrops that kept changing to fit the current song. It's simply Maiden. One thing that was bad though was the sound when you were in the back, some serious issues where it was cutting off and what not. I thought it was simply the wind at first, but didn't experience this the other days so they must've had some technical issues. Ahwell!
I left early though to catch the next band.
Watain
Which was Watain. I'm not really a big fan of these guys, but I still like them. And this was honestly the best show by them I've ever seen (sixth time I saw them)! In fact it was so good that I really didn't regret missing a couple of songs from Maiden! Pretty good grade if you ask me! I think one of the highlights of the set was The Wild Hunt! All in all, great visuals, great sound, great songs!
And then in the silence afterwards I couldn't help but hearing the echo from Stellarvore in my mind... God... of... DEATH! DEATH! DEATH...
Death to All
Because this band was the reason that finally tipped the scales for me to go to this festival this year. Death is the band that made me pick up a guitar. If I had to pick a single favourite band ever, it would probably be Death. So the chance to see this was awesome. On this show they had the line-up from Human (Sean Reinert on drums, Paul Masvidal on guitar and Steve DiGiorgio on bass) plus Max Phelps from Cynic on vocals. They also were guested by Hannes Grossman and Christian Muenzner from Obscura on two songs.
Okay, so with the above stated you probably realise I had very high expectations on this band. And I'm sorry to say I'm disappointed. I don't know what they were doing, but like half of the songs were really untight, and even missplayed. They completely butchered Spirit Crusher (Hannes Grossman sounded like he had butter fingers!) and left me wondering if they had even bothered to rehearse together... which really sucked. I really expect more from a band that states something like "we hope to honour the legacy of Chuck".
Well, on the good side at least the songs they managed to play correctly were really damn good. Mr Phelps is really good at immitating Chuck's vocal style... the guitars however, not so much. But when the songs were a bit more simple, they completely nailed it. So good for them they decided to end the show with Zombie Ritual / Baptized in Blood followed by Pull the Plug. This probably sounds a lot more negative than it should, but I had really high expectations and I just didn't know what to think afterwards...
Enslaved
Luckily for me the disappointment was quickly washed away by Enslaved who played right after! I saw these guys on MetalDays last year and was really impressed... and this time they just kept up the good work! This style of atmospheric heavy music is just so good live. I don't know what it is, but it feels really organic, like it's alive around you. This was without a doubt the highlight of the day for me! And when you look at which other bands were playing that says a lot I think! Despite nearly falling over from exhaustion after a long day I couldn't help but to keep headbanging to the very end of the show... so damn good.
Septicflesh
But the night didn't end there, as there was actually one more band left! Greek Death Metallers in the style of Behemoth if you didn't know all ready. I've seen them before and I know they're really good live... what I didn't expect was that they seemed to be really popular in France! A lot of people showed up to see them actually! This was also the release date for their new album Titan which meant they played a couple of songs live for the first time ever, and they fit right into the set. But I think the best parts were probably from Communion. That's when the crowd went wild!
They also had the coolest outro of the festival I think. The lights were set in such a way that you only saw the band as dark shadows against a smokey background. The longer the song went on, the band stopped playing and left the stage one by one, until only the drummer was left. It both looked and sounded really cool! Great ending of the first day!
Saturday 21/6
Benighted
Saturday started off bright and early with French Death Metal! For some reason I thought it would be the Swedish Benighted playing so I was a bit surprised, but oh well! This wasn't bad at all!
Borgne
So... one of the other bands I really wanted to see were Mgla... but they cancelled and were replaced by this band. It's not often you see a band without a drummer really. And unfortunately, without a live drummer it all gets very stale and kind of boring. Moving on...
Trollfest
Trollfest on the other hand had THREE drummers, perhaps they should've lended one to the previous band? Okay, so it wasn't three drum sets but still! This was another band I was surprised to see had become so popular in France! Lots of people showed up despite the early show! Good to see! And as for Trollfest... well, they were as crazy as usual. Quite entertaining indeed!
Incantation
After that it was time for some Old school Death Metal! Unfortunately for me I felt like they didn't have anything that stood out really. Despite never having heard them before I kind of knew what was coming. It certainly wasn't bad, but didn't really impress me either.
Walking Papers
So instead I took a walk over the area and ended up watching a song of this band. I left pretty quickly.
We Came as Romans
And saw a song from this band. Hardcore really isn't my style so once again left rather quickly...
Skyclad
So instead I escaped the heat and went back into the double-stage tent to see some Irish Folk Music! Sing a long all day and some jolly tunes! Nice to just sit down and relax while listening to!
Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench
Which of course made the change to Pungent Stench even bigger. In your face punkish Death Metal! I liked this stuff, but again it felt like I had heard it all before. So after half the set I went to grab some food instead.
Shining
And then back in time to see Shining. Kvarforth was charming as always, telling the crowd to fuck off and his usual nonsense. The band performed excellent however! So good music! Great guitar players who bring so much feeling into the music. Unfortunately the set ended early, because well... I guess Kvarforth didn't feel like playing another song or something. He ended the set like he started it, with an insult.
Dagoba
Since Shining ended early I actually saw the end of Dagoba as well. French Hardcore:ish stuff. Sounded heavy, but not really my style.
Status Quo
I also stayed to watch a couple of songs of these legends! Because I mean, Status Quo! Don't think I'll get any other chance of seeing these guys! What was most striking with this show was the distortion on the guitars... such frail looking old men on stage, but the guitars were really crushing!
Gorguts
Back into the tent to see some Canadian Death! And as the other times this day on this stage... it felt predictable. Solid Death Metal, nothing that stood out. Not bad, but not awesome either.
Clutch
On to something completely different. Hardrocking Clutch! Awesome voice with really catchy music, this was quite awesome stuff! Unfortunately a lot of other people thought so too, so it was difficult to keep the spot to see too much. So left early instead.
Tsjuder
Caught a couple of tunes from Norwegian Tsjuder! Have seen them before, and just like last time they kept blasting their Black Metal, grinding your ears with blasts and tremolos. When you think of Black Metal, you end up pretty close to what Tsjuder is.
Brutal Truth
Another band I saw at MetalDays last year! Fisherman Death Metal from New York! All though they really have a Flordia sound! I really like these guys, as their brand of Death Metal is really solid. Good stuff! Left early to catch...
Soulfly
So, Sepultura the day before and now Soulfly huh? It's not often you get to hear Roots Bloody Roots live twice on the same festival! I must say though that Max has lost so much power in his voice. Maybe he was just having a bad day, but his growls were really weak. The drums though were awesome! And they also get bonus points for two guitars on Roots heh.
Deep Purple
That Deep Purple played this festival was a really nice bonus for me! Because I like Deep Purple, but I would probably not pay just to see Deep Purple... So this was perfect! It's too bad Lord is no longer with us, but they sure have found a good replacement. And I guess that should be no surprise, because these guys are really good musicans! From start to fininsh the displayed awesome craftmanship and subtle manouvers from song to song. It was simply awesome. My only complaint is that they didn't play Highway Star but at least I got to hear Perfect Strangers. And the sing-a-long for Smoke on the Water was by far the loudest so far of the festival... I think the only one that could compete was Warpigs by Sabbath, but now I'm getting ahead of myself!
Aerosmith
Now this isn't a band I typically listen to, but I still wanted to see the show. Because it's one of those bands that you just know will deliver something big. They've been around for so long that they know what works and what's cool! And well, the stage show was pretty cool indeed. Nice lighting and an extra "cat walk" was added. They started with pretty strange songs though, not what I'd expect at least. But after having a break to see Nile I came back and did get to see some of the classic ballads at least! But well, I heard George Kollias calling me in the distance...
Nile
From Aerosmith to Nile... I'm not sure you have a much more abrupt change in style!
But Nile. Damn. Nile were simply awesome this night. Perfect playing with awesome sound, catching all the low registers crystal clear. Everything was just spot on. Nile completely blew everything else out of the waters that I had seen this day. I knew they would deliver, but not like this! Great song choices as well!
Gorgoroth
Stayed for the first song of Gorgoroth as well... but it was so untight I left soon after. Not much to say really.
Phil H. Anselmo & The Illegals
Instead I went to see Mr Anselmo. I've heard this particular band of his is supposed to be really bad live... but soon after I arrived they started playing Domination and Hollow of Pantera-fame. Any doubts were blown away immediatly. This is the closest I'll ever be to seeing Pantera live, and it was damn awesome.
Carcass
To end the night Carcass entered the tent-stage. Seems like Jeff Walker woke up on the wrong side though because he was really whiny. Complaining how boring the festival was, and really pissing on Avenged Sevenfold who were playing at the mainstage at the same time. Don't really know what was up with that, was he jealous or just an Englishman in France? I can't tell. The music was superb as usual however! Just what you'd expect out of Carcass these days.
Sunday 22/6
Year of the Goat
Another early rise to see this Swedish Rock band! I guess you wouldn't be too far off saying they're a bit remniscient with Ghost, and as such attracted a bit of a crowd for the early morning. Nice set to wake up to, and cool to hear a completely new song as well!
Blues Pills
Right after on the other mainstage this Blues Rock band with a female vocalist took over. Really catchy music, really easy listening. But the sun chased me away eventually...
Carnal Lust
Back in the tent where French Death Metal were playing! Damn, these guys had a lot of energy! I'm also impressed by how they got the crowd moving. I think this was one of the first bands that I saw to get a proper moshpit going! They also made a Wall of Death to top it off. Music wise it didn't stand out too much though!
Blacklodge
Another one of those bands who replaced a late cancellation... and weirdly enough they didn't have a drummer either! I guess French Black Metal bands are lacking good drummers! Much like the other band it was their downfall, as it became really monotome with sampled drums... oh well.
Obliteration
Go Norway! Everyone knows about Norwegian Black Metal, but Obliteration shows that they can also deliver awesome Death Metal! This particular style of Death Metal is a bit weird and groovy but heavy as fuck at the same time. The only other band I can think of that really does it is Morbus Chron. There's something with this style that gets me going, and I was headbanging through the entire (much too short) set! One of the best bands at the festival for me with out a doubt!
In Solitude
Then I had time to see a couple of songs of this Swedish Heavy Metal band. Have seen them before, and never really understood the hype. Pretty much exactly the same thing this time as well. It's all right, but doesn't keep my interest for long.
Crowbar
After that we decided to try the Ferris wheel (!) that they had put on the festival area! Which meant I watched Crowbar from the air! Such a great idea, this Ferris wheel. Crowbar were all right too.
Powerwolf
Transylvanian Power Metal! Seen them before, and they're always fun to see actually. Such an awesome singer, and quite funny as well! Great sing a-long tracks, and catchy tunes! Again it was the sun who made me leave though, back into the shade!
Dordeduh
And in the tent we had some real Rumanians! As this band formed from the ruins of Negură Bunget. So many weird instruments and cool sounds, just like their old band. Cool stuff, but it's not really made for festivals. They should play at a club instead where they get enough time to set up properly and everything for the best effect I think.
Repulsion
And then some more Old School Punkish Death Metal! I can't put my finger on it... but I really felt like something was missing here. So it felt kind of boring actually, which was surprising to me. I was looking forward to a cool show, but nothing really happened. Oh well.
Unleashed
Unleashed however you can always count on! They bring the thunder, they never surrender, they simply keep marching on! It was simply a normal show for Unleashed which means really high standard, not exceptional but good from start to end. No uneccesary breaks, more Viking Death Metal. My Warriors Screan For Me!
Equilibrium
German melodic Death after that! Another of those unexpected crowd favourites I think. But then again, they have really catchy tunes with easy to sing along with melodies. Quite nice show!
Annihilator
Somehow I actually managed to see the end of Annihilator... thing is I wasn't planning to see them, because I've been pretty disappointed with them the last couple of times I've seen them so... but it seems I made a mistake because Annihilator must've had a really good day this day because the last couple of songs sounded awesome! Loads of energy and power! Oh well, at least it was a nice warm-up for the next Thrash band...
Dark Angel
Re-united Dark Angel! Now Thrash Metal with Gene Hoglan on drums? How can you possibly go wrong? Short answer is: You can't. This was frickin' awesome. I don't really have any more words for this. Good fortune to get the chance to see these guys!
The Black Dahlia Murder
I didn't really plan to see these guys, but they were playing in the dual-stage tent and I was back there early to not miss Vreid so I did catch the end of this set. Okay, they had double circle pits going. There was a lot of dust in the tent. A lot of dust.
Vreid - Sognametal
Finally Vreid came out on stage! And as the 'Sognametal' moniker suggests, they started with Windir right away. YES. WINDIR. Seriously awesome stuff! Half the set was Windir classics and the rest were the best of of Vreid pretty much. Such a great set! From clarity to clarity! Great performance, great songs! When I heard the intro the hair on my arms just stood straight up. I never thought I'd get the chance to hear Windir live (RIP Valfar). And then you combine it with some of the awesome Black'n'Roll songs of Vreid and you get a simply amazing set. This was without a doubt one of the best shows at Hellfest for me. So good.
Paradise Lost
So then we got to calm down a little bit to Doomy Paradise Lost from UK and Sweden. One of the first comments was "Well, there's a lot of dust in here..." whereupon a guy behind me screamed "You know nothing!!!" (see Black Dahlia Murder above to understand why that was funny). Back to Paradise Lost though... it was a pretty weird choice of songs, and I couldn't really get into it. Also, they had the disadvantage of playing right after Win... Vreid. Oh well, maybe next time.
Soundgarden
So instead I went out to the mainstage to see the ending of Soundgarden who recently reunited with Chris Cornell. That was really cool, as he is a great singer. Not a band I usually listen to, but the three or four songs I saw was certainly nice!
Emperor
And then it was time for Emperor, again a band who just reunited... and this time with all original members inclucing Faust on the drums! Just scroll down and take a look at the setlist. It was played pretty much perfectly, and my only complaint really was that there was no I am the Black Wizards in the set. Other than that perfection. Even an encore which was a bit unexpected!
Black Sabbath
Sabbath is Sabbath. Without Sabbath this festival would probably not have existed, right? So it's damn cool to see them before they quit. It's probably one of the last chances as well, with Iommi having cancer and all that. But with that said a couple of songs were enough for me, I don't think I'd like to see a whole set of Sabbath. Don't get me wrong, they're good - but some songs feels like fillers I think. But then again, the good songs are instead really good to compensate!
Cool to see Ozzy as well, and he seemed to be having a blast. Making jokes for himself and what not!
1349
Eventually I left to see some Black Metal with Frost! ...which honestly turned out to be a bit of a mistake. It felt like their set was as monotone as those band with sampled drums, and it felt like the set would never end. It just kept going on and on. I know Frost can do better than this so I'm a bit disappointed!
Opeth
By this time I was so tired I was actually wobbling while standing still. But I still ended up very close to the front. Now, I'm a bit sceptic to Opeth lately as I don't really like the direction they're taking. I like prog, but I like Opeth more. So I want Opeth to sound like Opeth, not a prog band. So when they started with The Devil's Orchard I left my place in the front after half the song. Nearly falling over from exhaustion. But instead of going to bed I decided to sit down at the very back of the tent... and damn I'm happy I did that! Because after the first song they blasted out some old Opeth! Heir Apparent, Demon of the Fall, Hope Leaves, Deliverance, Blackwater Park. Yeah. Needless to say I was sitting down and headbanging to myself in the back. THIS is the Opeth I love! I have no idea why they decided to play a set like this, but I'm really happy they did. It became a perfect ending to the festival this way!
So that's it. 60 bands in three days. Overall I must say the festival felt really... worked on this year. They certainly learn from year to year. They had built a little town at the entrance for official merch and tattoos and stuff. All the merch stands in the festival area were really stylish, and especially at night when they light up the fires it looked really awesome. The stages looked great as well. The stage builders really made a great job here! One thing I didn't like though was that the two stages that shared the same tent was a bit small... because when they were soundchecking during a show on the other stage you heard it despite behing on the other side of the tent... And then there's the issue with a large festival and long lines to everything. It's not fun to stand in line and blazing sun for 15 minutes just to get into the festival area. Or to a toilet. Or to get some food. I think they need a bit more of everything if they want the festival to be this big. And as someone who sees a lot of bands... I wouldn't mind if they made it into a four day festival but kept the amount of bands the same. Heh. It does feel stressful sometimes when you want to see everything. It'd feel better if you didn't *have* to make the choice I think. But a great three days it was!
For conveniance I gaterhed a couple of setlist from setlist.fm ( http://www.setlist.fm/festival/2014/hellfest-2014-73d6e685.html ), but I did notice and correct a couple of errors so not sure they're entirely correct. But anyway:
